Cross Country Competes at Mahoning County Championships

The WBXC High School Boys and Girls competed at the Mahoning County Championships at Austintown Township Park last Wednesday, 9/24. Despite the standing water and deep gravel at points, the runners battled for places against some much bigger teams.

For the boys,

Finishing in the top 11% of 126 boys was junior Kyle Ormiston--14th place (18:27)!

Finishing in the top 20% of 126 boys were junior TJ Greenfield--23rd place (19:02) and freshman Logan Williams--25th place (19:09)!

The HS boys had their best team performance of the season, finishing 5th of 10 teams!

On the girls' side

Finishing in the top 17% of 88 girls was freshman Rachel Teague--15th place (22:57)! Finishing in the top 33% of 88 girls was junior Sonja Sanor--29th place (24:57)!

The girls were unable to compete as a team due to some injuries, but are hoping to have a full squad in the coming weeks.

The WBXC HS Boys and Girls will race next on Saturday, 10/4 at the Legends Meet at the Trumbull County Fairgrounds. The WBXC MS Boys and Girls will also be competing in that meet!

The WBXC MS teams competed on a challenging and soggy Mahoning County Championships course last Wednesday, 9/24. They gave it their all, despite being short a runner on each team due to a simultaneous MS football game.

For the boys,

Finishing in the top 35% of 103 runners were 8th grader Jace Bowlin--34th place (13:39) and 7th grader Wyatt Turman--37th place (13:44).

On the girls' side, there were some amazing performances.

Despite the fact that WB has 7 girls on the team and had only 6 at the meet, they were able to go toe to toe with teams from bigger schools that had 2, 3, and 4 TIMES as many runners. *Only the top 5 runners for each team score points; the other runners on a team can help by running faster than other teams' top-5.*

8th grader Tenley Stitle earned 2nd place (13:11), trailing the top girl by only 1.16 seconds! With this time and place, Stitle earned runner-up for Mahoning County, a medal, and set lifetime PR (personal record)!! 8th grader Izzy Cantwell finished in 5th place (13:46). Cantwell also earned a medal and set a lifetime PR! 8th grader Ellie Bickle (14:44) and 7th grader Belle Jerles (14:49) came in 17th and 18th place to pack a one-two punch and round out the top 21% of 85 girls! In dire need of a 5th runner for WB to cross the finish line, 7th grader Violet Benner and 8th grader Kennedy Fritz rose to the challenge! Benner (15:49) PR'd by a whopping 1:01 to finish 28th and Fritz (16:08) PR'd by a hefty 33 seconds to finish 29th!

With every single MS girl finishing in the top 35% of 85 girls, the WB Lady Warriors placed second only to the Poland Bulldogs, who bested them by a mere 4 points! The competition was fierce as WB beat the Boardman Spartans by only 3 points, with Canfield, Jackson Milton, South Range, and Austintown behind them.

Congratulations, WBXC MS girls, for taking home the Mahoning County Runner-up plaque--two years in a row!

All 4 WBXC teams will race next on Saturday, 10/4 at the Legends Meet at the Trumbull County Fairgrounds!
