The WBXC High School Boys and Girls competed in the Malone Invitational last Saturday at Malone University. For the first time, the meet took place at night under the lights! While the 5K (3.1-mile) course did not have as many hills as in the past, it was challenging with its tight spaces, curves, mentally challenging loops and bumpy terrain. To ensure that they got the full experience of running in the dark, the WBXC HS teams chose to compete in the tougher division, and they held their own!
For the boys,
Finishing in the top 10% of 140 boys and earning a medal was junior Kyle Ormiston--15th place (17:06). With this time, Ormiston set a lifetime PR (personal record)!Â
Finishing in the top 35% of 140 boys was freshman Logan Williams--50th place (18:23). Williams also set a lifetime PR!Â
The HS boys did an excellent job improving, as four additional runners set lifetime PR's: junior TJ Greenfield (18:39), junior Bennett Biggs (20:37), sophomore Aiden Scott (22:06), and freshman Carter Bandy (24:05)! Meanwhile, senior John Biggs (20:51) tied his best time for the season.
On the girls' side,Â
Finishing in the top 32% of 117 girls was freshman Rachel Teague--37th place (22:19). Teague's time was a lifetime PR for her!
Also having a tremendous race and setting a lifetime PR was freshman Luna Wolf (28:00). Sophomore Sonja Sanor (24:02) chimed in with a solid race of her own, setting a season PR.
The WBXC HS Boys and Girls will be back in racing action this Wednesday, 9/24 at the Mahoning County Meet at Austintown Township Park! The WBXC MS Boys and Girls will also be competing in that meet!
Â
The WBXC Middle School Boys and Girls competed in the Malone Invitational last Saturday evening at Malone University. Although it was not quite dark when they competed on their 2-mile course, it had all the same challenges of the HS course, minus a loop.Â
For the boys,
Finishing in the top 30% of 170 boysÂ
7th grader Wyatt Turman--49th place (13:14). With this time, Turman set a lifetime PR (personal record)!Â
Finishing in the top 35% of 170 boys was
8th grader Jace Bowlin--59th place (13:29). With this time, Bowlin also set a lifetime PR, which was extremely impressive given that this was only Bowlin's second race of the season due to a non-running injury and a few bouts of sickness.
Coming in with his best time to-date was 7th grader Greyson Ewing (15:46)!
For the girls, Â
Finishing in the top 9% of 100 runners and earning a medal was
8th grader Tenley Stitle--9th place (13:14). With this time, Stitle set a lifetime PR!
Finishing in the top 33% or better of 100 runners were
8th grader Izzy Cantwell--28th place (14:18),
7th grader Belle Jerles--29th place (14:21), who set a huge lifetime PR, and
8th grader Ellie Bickle--33rd place (14:32), who also set a lifetime PR!
8th grader Kennedy Fritz (16:41) ran her best time to-date while 7th grader Violet Benner (16:50) had an amazing first race after coming back from being sidelined for two months due to a broken foot!
For the third consecutive meet, the MS girls had notable team success! This week, they came in 5th place of 16 teams, only trailing the 4th place team by 4 points, beating larger and historically strong teams such as Uniontown Lake, West Holmes, and Waynesville.
The WBXC MS Boys and Girls will compete this Wednesday, 9/24 at Austintown Township Park as they join their HS teammates to take on the XC teams of Mahoning County!
