Beloit, OH -- The West Branch softball team dug itself out of a big early hole Tuesday night, but the late push wasn't enough in a 9-7 loss to Marlington
at home.
After falling behind 7-0 through the first four innings, the Warriors kept battling and made things interesting down the stretch. West Branch chipped away and then put together a strong final inning, scoring five runs in the seventh to bring the tying run to the plate.
The rally was sparked by aggressive at-bats and capitalizing on mistakes. Layla Carreon and Camryn Wike each delivered key RBI singles in the inning, while a pair of Marlington errors helped keep the pressure on.
Marlingon set the tone early, using a first-inning triple to jump out in front and adding on in the third to build separation. Despite the early deficit, the Warriors never let the game get out of reach.
Layla Carreon and Carly Loper led the way offensively with two hits apiece, while Carreon and Wike each drove in two runs. Zoey Carreon and Sara Schmidt each added a hit and scored twice.
Ellie Tucker went the distance in the circle for West Branch, working through all seven innings.
