Beloit, OH -- It was a tight, well-pitched game Thursday, but West Branch came up just short in a 3-2 loss to Minerva.
Ellie Tucker was strong in the circle, going the distance and recording all 18 outs while striking out eight.
West Branch actually outhit their opponent 7-4, with Tucker leading the way at the plate with two hits and an RBI. She also caused problems on the bases, swiping two bags as part of an aggressive night for the team, which totaled four stolen bases.
The difference came in a two-run second inning for the Lions, which proved to be just enough to hold off West Branch despite their steady offensive pressure throughout the game.
West Branch just quite couldn't quite capitalize on their chances.
Friday: West Branch struggled to keep pace Friday, falling 11-1 at home to Lakeview.
Things got tough early, as a couple of first-inning miscues helped Lakeview jump out to a quick lead. The gap widened in the third on an inside-the-park home run, and a big fifth inning put the game out of reach.
Maylin Hartzell got the start, working four innings in the circle. Offensively, West Branch showed some life with seven hits, led by Carly Loper, who went a perfect 2-for-2. Zoey Carreon drove in the team's lone run.
What's Next: West Branch hosts Marlington on Tuesday at 5 p.m. and looks to regroup after a tough end to the week.
