Carrollton, OH -- Behind a flawless performance at the plate from Sara Schmidt and a game-changing sixth inning, the West Branch softball team rallied past Carrollton
, 8-4 on Wednesday.
Schmidt was locked in all afternoon, going a perfect 3-for-3. She set the tone early with a triple in the first, stayed hot with a double in the third, and added a single in the fifth to cap off an impressive day. West Branch struck first in the opening inning when Layla Carreon delivered an RBI single to put the Warriors on the board. Carrollton answered to take a 2-1 lead after the first inning.
The Warriors kept battling. Camryn Wike came through with a clutch single after a six-pitch at-bat in the third to even things up at 2-2. Carrollton briefly regained the lead in the fourth, setting up a pivotal late-game push.That moment came in the sixth.
West Branch erupted for five runs on four hits in the inning to take control of the game for good. Zoey Carreon delivered the biggest swing, driving in two runs with a key single as the Warriors surged ahead 7-3.
In the circle, Ellie Tucker went the distance to earn the win. She worked through a tough outing, allowing four runs (three earned) while striking out six across seven innings.
Offensively, West Branch totaled 11 hits and stayed aggressive on the bases, swiping seven bags. Zoey Carreon and Layla Carreon each drove in two runs, while Zoe Metzger added a pair of hits. Elly Biskup and Carreon also sparked the offense with multiple stolen bases apiece.
What's Next: The Warriors will be right back in action tomorrow at Minerva, with first pitch set for 5 p.m.
