Three Lady Warrior wrestlers competed today at the OHSAA District Championships with a bid to the State Tournament on the line in Mentor, Ohio.Â
Abigail Janosik,
Abigail Benner, and
Grace Bates each donned the Warrior green in a hard fought tournament of some of the best wrestlers in the state. In the end, Bates was able to punch her ticket to State with a third place finish while Jonosik finished in fifth place and earned a trip as an alternate this weekend. Benner fought hard, but came up short to conclude a fine season for the senior wrestler.
Bates had to fight through the consolation bracket to earn her trip. After winning by pin in her opening match she fell to her rival from Mogadore 16-7. With a win or go home attitude, she won by pin and in a major decision (13-0) to get to the deciding "blood" round where she faced off against a Rootstown foe. With State on the line, Bates pinned her opponent in 2:45 moving on to the 3rd-4th place bout and securing her trip to State. In the final match of the day, she faced off once again against her rival from Mogadore and this time she came out on top sticking her 2:46 into the match to win by pin.
Janosik was victorious by pin in her first two matches but ran into some steep competition in the semifinals and in the "blood" round dropping both matches and moving to the 5th-6th place match for a chance to be an alternate at State. In what could be the final match of her career, Janosik pinned her opponent from Canton McKinley earning her a 5th place finish.
