Nicholas Scofinsky's two out, two run double in the top of the sixth inning propelled West Branch to a 2-1 victory over Girard in the season opening contest for both squads.
Scofinsky, in his first varsity plate appearance, drilled a ball to the right center gap to break a 0-0 tie in the sixth.
Anthony Perry (1-0) got the win on the mound as he pitched six strong innings not allowing a run. Perry allowed six hits and struck out five on the day.
Dominic Fotheringham picked up the save for the Warriors in his first varsity action from the mound allowing one unearned run while striking out two.
After neither team could manage a run, it was Perry who helped his own cause in the sixth inning. Perry singled to left field and with aggressive baserunning, reached second base after Girard could not manage to field and throw the ball cleanly. After an out,
Jeremiah Thomas reached first on an error setting up the Warriors with runners on the corners. Thomas stole second and after a fly out, Scofinsky would take a 1-1 deep to right center to drive in both Perry and Thomas giving the Warriors a 2-0 lead.
Girard would threaten in the sixth loading the bases with two outs, but Perry got the Indian hitter to ground out to first base to end the threat. In the 7th, a Warrior miscue gave the Indians new life with two outs. Girard had runners on 2nd and 3rd when the Indian batter hit a ball into the hole on the left side. Shortstop
Boston Mulinix made a sliding stop to keep it in the infield as Girard scored a run. Mulnix's throw to first base was late, but on the throw the Indian runner tried to take advantage and score from second on the play. Perry once again came up big as he would field the ball from his first base position and make a strong throw home to catcher
Charlie Biskup for the final out of the ball game.
Offensively Mulinix reached base three times on the day including a triple and two walks.
Up Next: West Branch will travel to Boardman on Wednesday, April 2nd. First pitch is scheduled for 5 PM.
