West Branch and Youngstown East are no strangers when it comes to playing each other. Last season, the Warriors beat the Golden Bears twice in close games, and last night's game proved to be just as competitive.
Both teams were hungry for a much-needed win, and the game started off slow for both sides. However, the Warriors found their rhythm early, knocking down two threes in the first quarter, including a clutch buzzer-beater by Joey Jackson as time expired. With the game tightly contested, East held a 13-12 lead after one.
The Golden Bears are an athletic team, but West Branch neutralized their scoring ability in the second quarter, giving up just seven points while adding nine of their own to take a 21-20 lead into halftime. Jeremiah Thomas came out of the break ready to make an impact, scoring eight third-quarter points. His quickness allowed him to attack the basket and finish in a big way. It seemed like every time West Branch scored, East responded, and the Golden Bears led 36-34 after three.
The fourth quarter began with some tension, as a few words were exchanged and two technical fouls were called in quick succession. The Warriors capitalized, converting 3 out of 4 free throws, maintaining momentum as East made a late push and cut the lead to 51-46. Clutch free-throw shooting from Jeremiah Thomas sealed the win for West Branch, 54-46.
