In a game for the ages, the Warriors fell just short of knocking off the two time defending Division IV State Champion Glenville Tarblooders, falling 13-0 in a OHSAA Regional Quarterfinal contest at Clinton Heacock Stadium.
Throughout the game, both teams showcased their outstanding defenses as the teams finished the first half deadlocked at zero. It was in the third quarter when the Tarblooders were finally able to breakthrough with a six yard touchdown run with just 3:34 to go in the quarter. Following a Warrior punt and a long Tarblooder return, Glenville added a second score on a 30 yard pass in the back corner of the south endzone to build a 13-0 lead.
The Warriors threatened a few times but were unable to crack the scoreboard. West Branch had a field goal at the end of the half just miss wide left, and a second field goal in the third quarter was blocked setting the stage for Glenville's first scoring drive.
Glenville came into the game with the pedigree and a massive offensive line but the Warriors were up to the task all night long. Defensive lineman
Cam Summers,
Dom Slimon,
Cohen Campbell, and
Gavin Gregory were able to control the line of scrimmage, freeing up linebackers
Jack Flickinger,
Clayton Day,
Garin Harlan, and
Zach Coffee to make plays and stifle the Tarblooder rushing attack. In the secondary, safeties
Carson Graham and
Lukas Black continued their excellent work in run support and corners
Anthony Perry and
Grady Close frustrated the Glenville passing attack.
On the day, the Warriors allowed 127 yards rushing on 42 attempts (3 yards per carry) and forced six Glenville punts.
Offensively, the Warriors were led by
Boston Mulinix who carried the ball nine times for 90 yards before leaving the game with an injury early in the second half. Quarterbacks
Jeremiah Thomas and
Grady Hirst completed 12 passes on the day with
Joey Jackson catching four of them.Â
Cooper Anderson added three catches while Perry caught two balls.
Flickinger also recovered a fumble for West Branch.
The Warriors finish the season at 11-1 including its fifth straight EBC Championship. The West Branch senior class finishes as one of the most successful in school history. In four seasons, no group has won more games (47) or playoff games (nine). The senior group never lost a league game and played 28 home games over the last four years. Congratulations to the entire team and the staff on a great season and one that made Warrior Nation proud.
