YOUNGSTOWN, OH — The West Branch boys soccer team came up just short on the road Thursday night, falling 3-2 to Cardinal Mooney in a hard-fought non-league matchup.
Mooney struck first just minutes into the match, but West Branch junior Cruz Leone responded with a goal of his own to tie the game. Later in the first half, fellow junior Reed Martucci added to the lead, sending the Warriors into the break on top, 2-1.
After halftime, the Cardinals battled back, netting a pair of goals to edge West Branch by one. Despite several late pushes, the Warriors couldn't find the equalizer.
Mason Thomas continued his strong playmaking stretch, picking up an assist in the match. Goalkeeper Lance Myers was on his toes the entire night making 10 saves.
The WB JV team won 2-1 over Mooney.
What's Next: The loss snaps West Branch's three-game winning streak, moving their record to 9-3 overall. The Warriors will look to bounce back on Tuesday, Sept. 30, when they travel to face EBC rival Salem.
